African Journey
South Africa is another place dear to my heart, having travelled there with my father some thirty-five years ago in the mid-1980’s. My career as a photojournalist was just beginning and I was acutely aware of the apartheid situation in the country. I could see it with my own eyes, and it was disturbing to say the least. We toured one the largest black township in the country called Soweto. It was miles upon miles of corrugated roofed shacks, no running water or electricity.
There were thousands of people crowded into the most basic shelters and such poverty I had ever witnessed. I took as many photos as I could while trying to cover the horror of my expression with my camera. I tried to photograph the inhabitants but the big picture was the volume of primitive housing so vast it was unable to be captured other than overhead with a drone. The photos of Soweto were captured in Black and white…
The photos presented in this portfolio are from a recent trip to South Africa on safari mixed with photos from my trip to a different part of the country 40 years ago. I challenge you to tell me which animals were photographed today or 40 years ago.
